2. Dog chewing up things while owner is away

Hi. I have a cute 9 month old terrier mix, who while a bit hyper has never been destructive. I have left her alone at home many times and she's always been good. Today, I left her at home for about an hour... I came home and she had chewed a pair of shoes, an ankle weight, gotten up to my desk and took down a cup and a bowl and also partially chewed a slipper. She's never done this before... can you offer an explanation, and maybe something I can do so that she doesn't do this again?

3. Bone and Raw food diets

Hello, I'm a dog trainer and dog lover. My question is why don't more vets reccommend a raw diet for pets? I am pretty shocked if they don't. Some common reasons I've heard is choking and contamination. However, choking is not likely when the right size pieces are chosen, and dogs have been known to even choke on kibble or even Greenies- yet those are still considered safe. With contamination, dogs eat many nasty things and their stomach acids kill most bacteria, as long as you're not feeding non-human quality meat, is this a big issue? It is obviously superior to any commercial diet, in my opinion, especially after all the recalls. Many natural rearing breeders are having great sucess with raw diet an no vaccines. I'm not sure what that would mean to Vets, but to me it's a wonderful thing. Dog food companies have only been around for about 80 years, and have our pets gotten any healthier?

5. Puppies having some diarrhea...should they be seen?

Hello Dr. Spohn, my husband and I took our two pitbull puppies to you a couple of weeks ago. You gave them some shots and heartworm preventative. They are the ones with the cropped ears. Anyways, they both have had a tinge of diarrhea. The male has had a little bit of blood in his. I am wondering if they ate something they shouldn't have since it has been so windy and garbage has been blowing in the yard? We actually found a clothing tag in the boys poop. They are still very active. We have not changed their food or anything. My husband was wondering if there is anything we could do for them at home or if it is serious enough to be looked at by you.

7. Vomiting cat, might need surgery

My 9 year old cat started vomiting suddenly and constantly. He isn't eating or drinking. He is urinating, and has had a bm which is whole and brown. We have taken him to the vet and they have run extensive blood work. All is fine. They did xrays, there is no obstruction, but his tummy was full of gas (extended about 4 times its normal size. They were able to excise with a tube some of the gas.) The vet (and entire staff) had no clue as to what this is. They want to do exploratory surgery, but I find that way too invasive. We are trying to use steroids for the tummy. He is a little more active but still won't eat or drink. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? More over how long can we continue to just monitor him since he is not eating...we are hoping he will start any day. Our inclination is to put him down if he doesn't show marked improvement as we just don't think that it is not worth putting a cat through all this surgery they want to do. At the same time we want to safely give him enough time to respond to meds. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

8. Vomiting with no interest in food

Hello Dr. Spohn, you have seen my dog Biggie at the Taylor Ranch Vet Clinic. I usually feed him 1/4 cup twice a day. I put hot water and carrots in his morning food and then he just eats dry in the afternoon. Lately, he has had no desire to eat in the afternoon. Sometimes he will eat if I handfeed him or mix hot water in with it. I am just wondering if I am spoiling him. If he doesn't eat, should I just let him skip that meal and not worry about it? Sometimes if he doesn't eat, he will throwup yellow. I am just thinking that he is hot. When I put his dinner down, he hides under the bed. He is still very active and drinking water and eating his breakfast. By the way, he is a Shih Tzu and he is 4 years old.
Thank You!
