1. Cat with a hind limb injury

My cat recently sustained a severe injury to his hind leg dislocating it and tearing ligaments. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your prompt response and empathy regarding his injuries. There is still a chance that his leg may have to be amputated but I appreciate all of the input you have given me regarding this type of injury. Thank you again, Dr. Spohn.

2. Grumpy, cranky, grouchy old dog

I have an 8 year old spaniel mix, and he can be a little over protective of me really when I was pregnant with my kids, never thought anything about it but now that he is getting older he seems to get agitated quickly and bothered. My oldest daughter was push on him and he tried to bite her and instead he scratched her hand instead of biting, then he got out of the yard and I chased him down only to have him growling and acting as though he was going to attack me. I know at times they can get cranky in older age, but should I worry enough to get rid of him I don't want to but again I have two small girls and if I cant trust him that's a very big problem. Is there something we can do to make him understand we are not out to hurt him or have him comfortable around us as he use to be. He has went to classes before to calm him down. Thanks so much!

Hi Lauryn

I do not know is you remember us but we work at AAcademy. I worked for Taryn and Toby still does. We always knew you would go places. Congratuations on being a vet. We currently have our babay chihuahua there at Petroglyph Hospital and we saw your name. I accidently stepped on him and hurt him. He is having surgery there today. We just wanted for you to explain all that was done to him and what we can expect for his recovery. His nmae is Sammie. If you get a chance look in him please. Thanks to people like you our babies(animals) can get better. Regards

4. Torn ACL...considering cruciate ligament surgery

My 11-month old lab/mutt mix started limping a month ago on and off. Last week, after deciding that it wasn't just growing pains, we took him in to the vet, who diagnosed a torn ACL, prescribing pain medication, joint vitamins and sedatives. We're supposed to keep him on those for a couple weeks, while carrying him everywhere.

If he doesn't get better, we have to decide whether or not to pursue surgery. We're willing to undertake the financial burden for him, but we've found so much conflicting information about it, we aren't sure. We've heard that recovery rate is as low as 20%, or as high as 90%.

What is your opinion on these surgeries, is it possible for him to recover if we continue resting him? Are there any less invasive alternatives to surgery?
