1. Vomiting cat, might need surgery

My 9 year old cat started vomiting suddenly and constantly. He isn't eating or drinking. He is urinating, and has had a bm which is whole and brown. We have taken him to the vet and they have run extensive blood work. All is fine. They did xrays, there is no obstruction, but his tummy was full of gas (extended about 4 times its normal size. They were able to excise with a tube some of the gas.) The vet (and entire staff) had no clue as to what this is. They want to do exploratory surgery, but I find that way too invasive. We are trying to use steroids for the tummy. He is a little more active but still won't eat or drink. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? More over how long can we continue to just monitor him since he is not eating...we are hoping he will start any day. Our inclination is to put him down if he doesn't show marked improvement as we just don't think that it is not worth putting a cat through all this surgery they want to do. At the same time we want to safely give him enough time to respond to meds. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be appreciated.
